If you have not head on over and vote on what you think are the best and worst of the year.

I just have one bone to pick with the votes so far that I see. The voting for the Jefferson Burdick Award for Contributions to the Hobby in particular. You have the choice between Keith Olberman, Mario Alejandro, Stephen Judd and Sy Berger.

For those of you who are not sure who Jefferson Burdick is, he is the father of card collecting. His research in the fields of cards, postcards, valentines and basically everything paper related he could find led to a system for cataloging of cards that we still use today. Jefferson's collection is stored and displayed at the Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art in New York City. His cataloging helped out the early pioneers of our hobby learn what was out there. If cards were even made. How rare something was in the 1940's. Today we take all this for granted but that was a tough task in the 30's. 40's and 50's.

I my opinion there should be no contest. Sy Berger should have 95% of the votes. In the history of baseball cards he is the Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, Nolan Ryan and Johnny Bench all rolled into one. He is the man who made the modern baseball card. He was the designer, back of card writer, idea man, strong armed contract guy signing up everyone he could and finally the champion of selling cards that kids WANTED in the 50's and 60's. Without Sy there would be no 1952 Mantle. Without Sy there would be no 1973 Topps. Without Sy there would be irregular, low budget sets throughout the years since he was the man who convinced the higher ups at Topps Co. best way to sell more gum for the was to add it to baseball card packs.

In the days before ESPN, inter webz and when kids still watched This Week In Baseball and read box scores and even listend to the Reds on transistor radios, Sy was the man who gave those kids the face to go with the stat line in the box score. He showed kids in Louisiana what the uniforms looked like for the Los Angeles Angels. Sy inspired the cool facts on the back of the baseball cards like Mark listens to records on his hi-fi system in the off season. Bob was a pitcher on the California Little League World Championship team in 1972. Dayf believes in getting high on cards and not drugs. I am sure you have a goofy or cool one you have memorized.

Has Olberman done anything as groundbreaking as this? Not even close. He has written some pretty good articles for SCD that helped me fill in some gaps on vintage isues. But he is best known to me for snapping up as many short prints and rarities as he can as fast as he can. Not inspiring kids to collect or learn.

Mario definitely had a big influence in 2009. But outside of constantly telling me how great cards in the 1990's were compared to today, I really can't think of the year's from now we will still use work he did. Sure he pissed off Beckett. But that was easy once he got large enough to matter to them. If my blog wrote the same things, they wouldn't give a flip. Box breaks are a dime a dozen on video and he was not the first to do those. Nor the best. In Wax Heaven's short life it gave people a place to speak out. But it did not change collecting. If you are going by inspirational value fo the vote, Ben Henry did more to show bloggers and collectors how it's done with style and good writting to those of us who started in the early days of blogging.

As for Stephen Judd I can't comment because I don't know who he is. I will remedy that today.

How often do you see a full player rainbow? This was one of those type in Reds in the ebay search engine and I found and won. Thank to you guys out there who give up on players just because they were traded. Makes life good for true collectors.
It truly is fun to have at least one player rainbow for your team. It's as rare as an eighth inning triple from Ken Griffey, Jr. But it's A-W-E-S-O-M-E!

First, I would like to thank you for faithfully following my Reds Card blog that rarely updates. It takes a dedicated inividual to read and reread and rereread various posts.

Second, I would like to give you a new mission in life. Instead of coming here and asking my opinion on video games I don't play. Game systems I don't own. And VG Tournies I will never seek out to enter, I would ask that you concentrate on this guy:

Barry Larkin

See Anonymous, Barry is in his first year of elegebility for the Baseball Hall of Fame. He has a tough road ahead of him to get in on his first ballot. Hawk, Bert, Robby all have legit shots at enshrinement this year. So a measly .300 career batting avg, 2,000+ hits, an MVP, World Series ring, multiple Gold Gloves, Silver Sluggers and being a hometown icon may not matter to voters as much.

Granted I would like to see Davey get in this year with Barry this year but let's get that comment campaign going for our man Larkin! Cause I need more great cards of Barry to add to my collection like the above 2005 Donruss Signature Stars Bat / Autograph numbered to ONLY 25! As you can see Mr. Larkin is daring some schlub named Chipuh to try his luck with a hit baseball in Barry's direction. Add that to the bat used in hiting the game winning RBI and a great sig and we have a classic card.

Crazy but brief.... I am the drafter/architect/estimator for my jobsite here in Hawaii. Well the place that I order my light fixtures at so happens to be the son of Jim Campbell. I've known his son through my company for the past few years and a xmas or two ago I gave him all the cards of his father that were released (about 12). Well I get a package a week later with signed cards and 8x10s. A month later I meet this hot blonde and we start dating. Turns out her Godfather is Jim Campbell's son. Small world/smaller island. Well a couple months later the relationship dies out and things haven't been quite the same at work with the business relationship with the son. Doh! Still got these sweet cards though!

I have purchased my last new product from a card manufacturer.
Over the past two weeks I have purchased
eleven boxes of your Target Series One parallel cards.

I AM STILL 69 CARDS SHORT OF A 330 CARD SET.

OUT OF 880 CARDS PURCHASED I CANNOT FIND
330 SINGLE CARDS TO MAKE A SET.

I have 7 Dusty Baker cards.
Yet I am still 69 cards short of a set.

THIS IS BULLSHIT.

There is no excuse in this day and age
for coalition as bad as late eighties products.
Two of the boxes had the exact same cards pack for pack. Even the Topps Town cards.
Three other boxes only had a packs worth of difference between them.

In the Targets I have found boxes they had no more than 3 in stock. Total. I checked. If you are going to do something like this MAKE SURE there is enough product to be sold. If you are going to only make a small amount. LET PEOPLE KNOW. The only reason I have been able to complete a Reds team set of cards is the fact that someone in another state had them and offered them.

As much as I enjoy opening packs I will no longer do so on any new product.
I have spent over $230 on boxes of this product AND DO NOT HAVE A 330 CARD SET. SCREW YOU TOPPS.

Blog Bat Around Five

After missing the past four Blog Bat Arounds due to the job I decided to join in on fifth one.
Why?

Simple:

5 is Johnny Bench's Uniform Number.

What is the best experience you have
had acquiring cards or memorabilia?

That is a simple answer for me.

Do I bore you with the story of having my photo taken with said Johnny and The Chicken as a seven year old kid? Nah.

Do you smile in awe about my meeting Cal and Eddie at a 1983 preseason game in New Orleans with Eddie messing up my hair right before Cal signed a ball "To The Squrt - Cal Ripken Jr."?
Blah, blah, blah.

Who wants to hear about the one hour limo ride talking shop with Dale Murphy?

My first post told you guys about how I started in collecting.

So hear you go:

The best experience I have ever had in collecting is the day I got the card above. A simple Fleer sticker of Johnny Bench's Uni and a Reds pennant.
Last April 20th I lost all my material things except for the clothes in my weekend pack and my keys. For the second time in just under three years I had lost it all. Another collection down the drain so to speak. What I had managed to gather in the form of Reds and sets after Hurricane Katrina were gone. Again.
It was a sick feeling.

A few fellow bloggers asked why the absence from Cincinnati Reds Cards. I sent emails letting them know. Thanks to you guys who read us and Brad's friends on The Bench, Reds cards started arriving en mass. Four cards here, twenty there. A new bat card from George Foster. A 1992 Billy Hatcher. Dave Concepcion's auto on a Fleer. Plenty of goodies that make Reds collectors all giggly as schoolgirls.

Those cards were a beacon of light as I checked the mail every few days. Seeing that this community has no problem giving (especially cards of teams they do not like) to other colllectors out of the goodness of their hearts still makes me happy. I somehow doubt you guys have a special place in your hearts for a 1979 Topps Dave Collins.

And all of the people who sent some Reds cards should smile and hold your heads high and chest puffed out knowing the cards you sent are now in a loving, happy, Cubs free environment known to me as the Salt Lake Reds Palace.

That is my greatest collecting exerience.

We haven't had a good Johnny Bench card lately so here it is:

Every generation has two great catchers fans immediately think of. That is why this card makes sense showing Bench and I Rod together. The 1970's / 80's had Johnny Bench and Carlton Fisk. Thurmon might have had it if not for the plane crash. Both guys are icons of the game for the catcher's position. Bench for being the greatest defensive catcher ever and a master field general with strong bat. Fisk for his historic home run , a gritty, long career and a decent bat. The debate between Yogi and Johnny will always play on but Johnny Bench will always be the best in my books.
Now for Ivan. From the early 1990's until about 2005 it was clearly between he and Mike Piazza for the generations best catcher. Ivan has the edge in game calling with Piazza the edge in batting. Too even for me to call.

So tie breaker goes to Johnny Bench.
Gretest catcher of the last fourty years. Period.

Great set of cards as you can see. They came in a little folder with some player info and Redsfest XI info. It just shows that the Reds are the best team in baseball to their fans.

Fred Hutchinson
Manager of the 1961 National League champion Cincinnati Reds.

This guy had quite a history.
24 games over .500 as a major league pitcher.
Managed the Reds.
3.72 career E.R.A
Managed the Reds.
Stole Pete Rose's date at the ballpark when Pete was a rookie.
Learned how to get fired from the Cardinals and lead the Reds to the World Series.

Unfortunately, Fred had his baseball life cut short by cancer. He was an architect of rebuilding the Reds farm system in the early sixties that led to the days of the Big Red Machine of the 1970's.

As for the Rose story:
In "My Life Behind Bars" Pete recalls how he managed to show off the crew cut as a rookie during Spring Training to a "more experienced" woman. He brought her to the ball park the next day. Seems Fred had seen her around during the past few Spring Trainings and warned Pete about how he was young and could ruin his reputation and career with a woman like that. Young Rose agreed and promptly sent the lass away. Next afternoon Pete looks up to see a smiling Hutch with balloons on one arm and the lovely young lady on the next. Fred sees Pete staring in disbelief and yells "You're welcome. Don't miss curfew!"
That guy should be in the Hall of Fame for that alone. The only pitcher to make Pete Rose freeze in disbelief.

These cards are typical Topps Chrome cards. Only difference is that there were 300 sheets of the 08 Chrome set made for the National last year. Sheets were handed out to dealers and VIPs in attendance. All cards have a dark gold rough foil print on them to mark the event. These are not your typical National stamped cards in that this foil ain't comin off anytime soon.
These cards were cut from a sheet by a professional press operator and have better corners and edges than any Chrome product I have purchased. I am glad I have a subscription to SCD as that is where I found the dealer, Kevin Savage Cards, with the team sets for sale.

For those who thought I was too high puhlootin to mix it up with the lesser folk here is proof I can kick it old school and show off my mad cuhlektn sklz.

How can anyone who was collecting in the mid eighties not have these cards? 79¢ a box in '82 and then 99¢ in '87 for a box of these bad boys. Can you think of any other sets from then that have retained their values? I think not.

These glossy cards mark the celebration of 25 years of Blue Light Specials and crappy toy knockoffs. I bet that is where dayf got his first one! Nicer photos than in '82 and better printing make this a better set. At least to me.

How can you go wrong with Frank, Pete and Johnathan? You can't!

This is the first Master Photo ( 5x7) I have come across of ol Bip in over a decade. Picked it up for a clam an a half (w s/h) on the collector's bank account kryptonite known as ebay. I really dig the oversize white border. It really sets off the card photo. And guess what he's got that we mere mortals will never have.
That's right. Bip's rockin the Bip Robert's Portrait Wristband / Score on any Braves Glove combo. Only one other Immortal Reds legend has been photographed wearing something us mere fans can only dream about rockin with ease.

2000 Fleer Tradition

This is one cool set. The HD pictures that show the players in all their wrinkled glory. The colors that POP! SMACK! and PAHYAH! at ya. The thick old time fiberboard you can use as a toothpick if this is your smile. But a little known gem is the card backs. I don't know who the unemployed comic book guy was that did these but they are original to say the least.

I read a funny post today at I Heart Halos.

Seems Bip Roberts is the Babe Ruth of baseball cards. The post got me to wondering if I am the only collector that adds guest appearance cards and wearing uniform but with another team cards to the team sets.

Case in point:

1996 Topps
Freakin Braves player Jeff Blauser's card.

But it has Ron Gant in a Reds uni on it. So I have it at the end of my 1996 Reds team set in the binder. This is clearly a Braves card. Am I a bit too possessive when it comes to Reds?

Or this:

Card one from 2000 Fleer Tradition clearly belongs in the Reds team set. But what about Greg? He is a Devil Ray. Not a Reds player. But he is in a Reds uniform. Therefore I have him at the end of the team set.

Are there any other collectors out there who do this or have any of you even thought about doing this? Just wondering if I am the only one.

Also. Does Wax Heaven consider this a Canseco card?

Below is a great set of cards. As stated in an earlier post this was a mistake buy. I was just bidding on the regular set of 2005 Studio I thought. READ THE AUCTIONS PEOPLE! The cards have a thin but sturdy make up with nice smooth gloss surfacing. The background shows the view of the Natti looking from Kan Tuck E over the river into downtown. I can't stand that bridge. Too many people slow down on it going into a nearly blind curve where the interstates split to look at the area. The photos are well made and cropped. Nice shadowing around them so they blend into the background. Old advertising rule: Want a great looking design: Black, White and Red. Studio did that perfectly with these cards. Enjoy.

An entire set of parallels? I guess it's just that desire to horde stuff. The guys at Topps tapped into this with me when it comes to 2001 Topps Fusion. There is almost no difference between regular 2001 Topps Gallery, Finest and Bowman's Best than the Topps Fusion logo on them. Talk about a great way to get rid of excess material for printing.

I did not know that Scott was born in Ft. Polk, LA, until this morning. That is were they train National Guard regulars for Mississippi and Louisianna for basic training. Bet you did not know that.
Look at those eyes boring into Sammy Sosa as the Dominican Pop Up Machine begins to wonder if a swing is worth it against the All-Star. Williamson iss fixn to throw some two seam stinky cheddar Sosa's way. As you can tell by the set glove and the power push in the leg this contest was over before it started.

Any TRUE Reds fan would have known that.

The Reds have used the team a few times in the history of the Indians (even before snagging Casey and Phillips) as an affiliate.

So today I have a set I recently acquired of the 1978 Division Champion Indianapolis Indians

Sorry I had to use the ebay scans but these cards need flattening and are just a tad too big to fit in a 9 page.

So enjoy this great look at late 70's Reds goodies. Mario Soto, Harry Spillman, Mike LaCoss and the gang. And one question - when are the Major League card makers going to start adding Trainers and Bench Coaches to their sets?

Enough with the slacking. I now have a card that will make you ruin a new pair of pants.

Barry Larkin 1992 Newsport French Magazine Insert

A little larger than a postcard this glossy paper insert was unknown to the hobby until early 1992. Or the time they were made. As you can see our hero, Barry Larkin is in the beginning of scooping and slinging another pathetic attempt by Lenny Dykstra to get on base. The card has a clean, neat design with only one flaw. B. Larkin. Has Barry not proven he is a Hall of Famer by 1992? Yes! Is he some common player like J. Canseco or R. Henderson? I think not. So why we got B. instead of Barry is beyond this Reds fan.

While the front has some English on it, because only Americans collect baseball stuff, the back is slightly less easier to read. Unless you know French. If you do please feel free to translate for a person who found a way to seep through two years of French and still have the highest grade in the class. I can make out Cincinnati and 1990. Hope that helps.

But what makes this card a great card? Is it the fact so few know about it? Nope. Is it the fact these are pretty rare? Nope. Is it because you can not name any other 1992 Barry Larkin card that books at twenty dollars? Nope. It's a lot simpler than all these put together:

He's rocking the Barry Larkin Portrait wristbands. ON BOTH WRISTS! How bad a$$ are you when you can do that and people say "Man! I wish I could pull that off!" When you can do that and not come across like this guy:
See. No portrait wristbands leads to people hating you. Even Chicago National League team fans.

Alright. Since I'm obviously slackin hardcore I thought I'd give a double slap in the face at ol' Joe the supposed loser Indians fan. But hey, I guess he needed a American League team to take on my A's. So that's cool.

Back to the items at hand. Here are two cards that I love. I had almost passed up on one of them as I thought they were the same card (going off of memory that is). I decided to get the other Griffey figuring if it is a dupe it would be sent to Joe for XMAS. Well as it turns out they just closely resemble each other.

The SP Legendary Cuts card on the right shows his afro stickin' out the bottom of his helmet and a fresh look on his face. Where as the UD Classics card shows a bit aged and bewildered look. I just love the look of these two cards side by side!

These cards were included in Beckett Baseball back in Aught 3. If you were like me and bought from a newsstand or bookstore you always got there after some punk had ripped opened the plastic on all the magazines to take the cards. So this one was found on the bay by Bay Rat about a month ago. For sale by someone who had 53 others. Wonder how he got them?
This is my favorite year of Diamond King. The bright colors for the set. No dark borders foreshadowing Donruss' leaving baseball. The smile on Austin as his future looks good. Even the final season patch for Riverfront Stadium.

Here is something Austin does not as often but well. A three run shot off the Rockies. Notice how pissed the pitcher is?

The idea was to get you to Pacific's site and "amaze" you with stats and cool stuf from Pacific. Did not work to well from what I can tell. The cards are still here but Pacific is not.

Overall the design is pretty tame by 90's standards. No flash. No see through.
A good clean action shot on each card. The small amount of foil for the palyer name. The card name taking up too much space. Overall I like the set because of the photos and colors. Plus the Reds logo helps out.

I jumped into the fray in Fontana, CA, recently and walked into a "Grand Opening Sale" at a new card shop while in town. Big mistake.
No bargain boxes full of needed cards.
No glass cases full of awesome cards.
No mystery bags full of 1994 Fleer and 92 Donruss.

Just loads and loads of Dodgers cards and stuff. Raiders cards and stuff. USC stuff. Angels stuff and a few cards.
It felt like I walked into a love fest for my former NL West opponents and anything SoCal related. But no Padres stuff for some reason.

Seeing the disappointed look upon my red cheeked face, the behind the counter help (think way too hot Mexican girl for a card shop) asked if she could help. I said nice store, but no Reds cards in view. With a smile she pointed to a dark dusty corner. Feeling like Ohio Joe on a quest for the Crystal Reds Cards, I smiled and stumbled over. Freekin Dodgers throw rugs. Who buys anything Dodgers? People too ashamed to admit they are A's fans? Just guessin.

The Return

I'm back with an all ex-Reds set. Only three cards were made for the regular issue. Adam Dunn of the Diamondbacks, Barry Larkin of the Nationals and Ken Griffey Jr. of the White Sox. Sean Casey, Dunn and Griffey had some G/U cards and Chris Denorfia was included in the update set numbered to 750.

This was an interesting set for me. I first obtained a card (Larkin no less) as a promo in Tuff Stuff Magazine in 05. I was hooked from there.
The background is what stands out to me. The colors blend well and make the photo stand out. I like the use of the players initials on the back. Plus Upper Deck used really good photos for a change in 2005 for the cards. When lined up in a row the cards make one continuious card from the edges being seemless. This makes a simple person like me happy.

Thanks goes out to the guys from the Bench for the cards that compromise this Titanic sized team set. The only thing harder than completing this would be a 3 game wining streak by the Reds.

Sorry for te dellay in posting, but life as a truck driver and student in this down economy has me away from home more thatn I would like. And I am now moved into a residence. No longer just sleeping in the truck. Thanks to everyone out there. Including all 4 people on the RSS feed.

1981 Reds Love Fest

I kick start the week with this gem of a set:
1981 Topps Reds Team Set

The 1981 baseball season is, unfortunately, best remembered for the ten-week players' strike that canceled 713 games and put America through a disorientating summer. The players' union walked out because the league's owners, worried about rising salaries, were trying to cut back on free agency.

Major league baseball eventually resumed, but under an unpopular "split-season" format. According to the format, those teams in first place before the strike began were declared first-half winners. The teams that finished atop their divisions after the strike would be declared second-half winners. The first-half winners would then play the second-half winners in divisional playoffs.

The format garnered more playoff revenue for the league, but it turned out to be an unfair and embarrassing creation. Cincinnati and St. Louis, the National League teams with the best overall records, didn't even make the playoffs.

This is the set that kick started it all. Made me the totally RAD guy I am today.
It all started with No. 600. The Johnny Bench. Greatest. Catcher. EVUH.

The team set starts out with Tom Hume standing alongside 2 of the best closers of the decade. And wearing less facial hair. What up Hume?

Next is Ron Oester showing off the shiny new batting helmet bought to make players happy enough not to strike.

Hector Cruz laughs. Why? Someone just said the Atlanta team was good.

Doug Bair doing what Doug Bair did best. Waiting to come in and make a save.

Harry Spillman ready for the weak grounder from some scrub named Horner on that Atlanta team.

Charlie Liebrandt in the windup that won ONE game in 1981. But he shares the same birthday as me. October 4.

Joe Nolan. Backup catcher No. 459 during the Late Johnny Bench years slaps a double off of Rick Reuschel of that Chicago National League team.

I have the press plate of this card but not the card itself so I cannot talk about how good it looks. That is a given with the fact it is a member of the Vaunted Cincinnati Reds.
